Celebrating St Patrick's Day in Barcelona

How to celebrate St Patrick's Day in Barcelona — finding your crowd, planning ahead, and making the most of Paddy's Day in the sun.

There's nothing quite like St Patrick's Day abroad. Being away from home on the 17th of March can make you feel more Irish than ever — and Barcelona is a great place to celebrate. Here's how to make the most of Paddy's Day in the sun.

It's a normal working day here

First, the practical bit: 17 March isn't a public holiday in Spain. Unless it falls on a weekend, you, your friends and most bar staff will be working. Many people celebrate in the evening, or save the big celebration for the nearest weekend. Ask for the afternoon off early if you want it.

Find your crowd

Barcelona has plenty of Irish pubs, and on St Patrick's Day they fill up fast — with Irish people, other expats and plenty of curious locals. A few tips:

  • Book ahead or arrive early. Popular spots can be packed by early evening.
  • Go with a group. It's more fun, and easier to grab a table.
  • Check local listings. Celebrations and events around the city change from year to year, so keep an eye on what's planned closer to the date.

Irish in Barcelona posts its own Paddy's Day plans on Meetup, so you'll never be stuck for somewhere to go — or someone to go with.

Bring a bit of home

  • Wear the green. Jerseys, hats, face paint — it all counts.
  • Teach your friends. Barcelona is full of people from all over the world, and they love joining in. Teach them a few words of Irish — sláinte for "cheers" is a good start.
  • Cook something. If you'd rather a quieter day, host a dinner for friends — soda bread, a stew, or whatever reminds you of home.
  • Call home. Video-call the family during the parade back in Ireland. They'll be glad to see you celebrating.

Spring festivals in Barcelona

If Paddy's Day gives you a taste for celebrating, Barcelona has plenty more in spring. On 23 April it's Sant Jordi — Catalonia's day of books and roses, when the streets fill with stalls. It's one of the loveliest days of the year in the city, and a nice way to embrace local traditions alongside your own.
