Frequently asked questions

Everything you need to know about joining Irish in Barcelona, our events, and how the community works.

General

What is Irish in Barcelona?
Irish in Barcelona is a friendly social community for Irish people living in Barcelona — and for anyone who loves Irish company. We get together every three months for in-person meetups. The goal is simple: make it easy to meet genuine people and feel at home in the city.
Do I have to be Irish to join?
Not at all! Irish, Northern Irish, half-Irish, Irish-at-heart or just curious — everyone 18+ is welcome. Our events bring together Irish people and friends from all over the world.
How is Irish in Barcelona connected to AmigoUp?
Irish in Barcelona is part of the AmigoUp community. Our Irish events are posted on our own Meetup group, and you're just as welcome at AmigoUp's wider events, which you'll find on amigoup.com.
Is it free to join?
Yes! Joining is completely free. Most of our events are also free or very low cost. Any event with an entry fee will always be clearly listed on our Meetup.com page before you RSVP.
Who can join?
Anyone 18+ is welcome — whether you've just arrived from Ireland, have been here for years, or are simply a friend of Ireland. You don't need to speak Spanish or know anyone. If you're up for meeting new people, you'll fit right in.
What language do you speak at events?
English is the common language at our events, though you'll hear plenty of Spanish and other languages too. No language skills required — just show up and say hi!

Events

How do I find out about upcoming events?
All public events are posted on our Meetup.com page and on our events page. You can RSVP on Meetup to get reminders.
Do I need to RSVP?
For most events, RSVPing via Meetup.com is encouraged so we can plan numbers — but for casual meetups you're always welcome to just show up. Events with a venue booking or limited spots will require an RSVP; this will be noted in the event description.
What kinds of events do you organise?
We run a wide mix: coffee meetups, match nights for the big rugby, GAA and football games, pub quizzes, social walks, sports (padel, hiking), beach days, and more. There's a meetup every three months, and we're always open to suggestions from the community.
Can I suggest or organise an event?
Absolutely! Community members can suggest events in the WhatsApp group. If you'd like to take the lead on organising something, reach out to an admin — we love member-led events.

WhatsApp Group

How do I join the WhatsApp group?
The WhatsApp community is for people who've come along to an event. After your first meetup, ask one of the organisers for the link — or message us on Instagram. This keeps the group friendly and authentic.
What are the group rules?

We keep it simple — be kind, be respectful, have fun. A few specifics:

  • ✓ Keep messages in English
  • ✓ Keep messages relevant to the group (events, recommendations, meetups)
  • ✓ No spam, promotions, or unsolicited advertising
  • ✓ No political, religious, or divisive content
  • ✓ Treat everyone with respect — zero tolerance for harassment

Admins reserve the right to remove members who don't respect the community.

How active is the WhatsApp group?
Very active but not spammy! Members share event plans, spontaneous outing ideas, local tips, and general chat daily. It's a friendly, supportive space — not overwhelming, but always something going on.
How do I access the WhatsApp sub groups?
It's very simple. Once you join the WhatsApp community, you'll be able to see all the subgroups. You need to join each subgroup you're interested in; otherwise, you won't receive messages from that group. To switch between subgroups, tap the Community menu icon at the top right of the chat you're currently in.
